One question that we hear a lot is how to know the best carat size to choose for a particular piece.

Likely the biggest factor is the personal taste of the individual who is your intended recipient.   Personal tastes vary and while the 1 carat center stone is by far the most popular choice for both engagement ring center stones and earrings alike, we see a little bit of everything from ½ carat to 4 carat stones as the stars of a piece.  Lifestyles play a big role as well.  People with active jobs and lives may prefer much smaller stones with low profile settings to minimize the risk of damaging the piece.

You’ll also want to take into account the finger size of the recipient, since proportionally to the finger size, some stones may appear smaller or larger.

Another factor to keep in mind is that carat signifies the weight of a stone – not the exact dimensions.  Different shapes end up having different millimeter measurements at the different carat weights, so when in doubt, call us and we can provide dimensions for you.

Of course, you’ll also want to consider the setting itself.  Larger stones are more visually appealing when set in proportionally sized settings.

And finally, here are some images to provide perspective and a visual comparison.
