December’s birthstones are giving us the blues – literally!  December offers Zircon, Tanzanite and Turquoise to its babies, all beautifully blue in color.

Zircon is a natural gem that is said to be comprised of the oldest mineral on earth.  Zircon is found in a range of colors, most commonly brownish-red, but the beautiful and very popular blue Zircon is one of December’s birthstones.  Zircon measures 7.5 on the Mohs’ scale, so it can chip easily – especially on the faceted edges of the gem.  Blue Zircon was believed to ward off evil, bring prosperity and even help the wearer achieve goals by increasing confidence and compassion.

Tanzanite is made up of a mineral called zoisite and not surprisingly originated in Tanzania as the name hints.  While the beautiful blue of Tanzanite is often mistaken for sapphires, Tanzanite measures 6.5 – 7 on the Mohs’ scale, much softer than the 9 of a sapphire.  Tanzanite is a newer gem relatively speaking and was first mistaken for sapphire by the individuals who discovered deposits of it in Tanzania.  Tanzanite is believed by some to have soothing and calming properties.

Turquoise is the softest of December’s birthstone choices at only 6 on the Mohs’ scale.  This relative softness has made the gem a top choice in gemstone carvings and its popularity in the US is in part due to the major role it plays in Native American jewelry.  While turquoise is also blue, it is a very distinctive blue that borders on greenish, robin’s egg blue.  Much of the world’s turquoise comes from the US and Arizona is the largest source within the US.  The stone’s blue coloring comes from copper that is dissolved into the soil by rainwater, leaving deposits of this blue beauty.  Turquoise has been said to possess the power to protect, communicate with the spirit in the sky and improve accuracy to name a few.

Whichever blue suits you, we can create a birthstone piece you’ll be proud to wear.
