There are a lot of conflicting messages about diamonds out there.  As we move into an era with a more heightened awareness of where our consumer goods come from and what this means for the environment and the world's population, diamonds have gotten a lot of notice.  Lab-created diamonds have become a popular choice for those who want to steer clear of conflict, violence and damage to the eco-system when purchasing a symbol of unending love.

We have had access to lab-created diamonds for some time now - much longer than the time we've been actively using them for jewelry.  Lab-created diamonds have been used industrially since the 1950's due to the fact that they share all the characteristics of mined diamonds.  One reason lab-created or man-made diamonds weren't commonly used for jewelry is that people didn't want "fake" diamonds.  The truth is that lab-created diamonds (also called man-made or synthetic diamonds) are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds.  Lab-created diamonds share every property that mined diamonds have.  They are equally hard (a 10 on the Mohs' Scale of relative hardness), equally sparkly, come in the same range of clarities and colors and are made up of carbon.

Lab-created diamonds are different from their mined counterparts only in the way they are created.

One confusing issue becomes that not all gemstones that are created in a lab are true diamonds.  Simulants are lab-created gems that simulate the sparkle and brilliance of mined diamonds, but since they aren't chemically the same as diamonds, they don't share every diamond property.

While science has come a long way, simulants aren't as hard as diamonds (ours measure a 9.2 on the Mohs' Scale, but you should verify the hardness when buying simulants elsewhere).  Many retailers advertise simulant gemstones that are "lab-created" and say that they are as "good as diamonds".  While simulants can be a beautiful and affordable option, it's important to know what you're getting.  No matter where you buy, if you're buying a true diamond (man-made or mined) that is .3 carats or over, you should be receiving a diamond grading certificate with your purchase.  A sample certificate is pictured below.

Eco Diamond is proud to offer true lab-created Eco Diamonds® in addition to our Eco Diamond® Simulants – both are beautiful and ethical jewelry choices.  The best part is that we make it easy to compare our options and will always give you the real facts on the stone of your choice.  When you have questions, we'll provide answers.  We want you to be delighted with your decision - whether you choose man-made diamonds or simulants.  Call our team for the information you need to make your decision!
