The month of June offers two beautiful choices when it comes to birthstones; the Pearl and Alexandrite both belong to this month. While each is valuable and rare, they are quite different from each other. Which one suits you?

Pearl

Pearls: teardrops of Greek gods, dewdrops from the heavens, teardrops of mermaids, or the prize of a slayed dragon? No matter which legend you choose to believe, the making of a pearl is much more than an old fable. Pearls are the only gemstones created by living creatures; mollusks produce natural pearls when microscopic rock and sand particles wriggle their way into the mollusk. In order to cope with the irritation of the foreign object, the mollusk covers it with layers of shell materials, producing the pearl.

The sacred pearl has been a global, long-lasting symbol of purity, innocence, and wisdom. Pearls are traditional gifts for couples on their 1st, 3rd, 12th, and 30th anniversaries.

Today, natural pearls are harvested in the Indian Ocean by divers from Australia. However, production of cultured pearls beginning in the 1920’s has altered the pearl market by providing affordable but beautiful pieces of jewelry to everyday families.

Alexandrites

Alexandrites are a relatively new gemstone, discovered in Russian emerald mines in 1834. Coincidentally, 1834 was the same year Czar Alexander II came of age, dedicating the name of this mysterious gemstone. Known as “emeralds by day, rubies by night”, believe it or not, this chameleon-like gemstone is even more valuable than its ruby and emerald comparisons.

Alexandrites are associated with intelligence and imagination and are believed to improve concentration, intuition, and creativity.

Unfortunately, the mines in Russia have since been exhausted of these elusive gems, but are still mined in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil. However, it is known that these alexandrites do not compare to the incandescent beauty and clarity of those found in Russia.
