September's Beautiful Birthstone

September birthdays have the regal sapphire as their birthstone.  One of the most popular gemstones - regardless of the wearer's birthday, sapphires in jewelry most often are a deep, rich blue.

It not just their color that’s rich; Sapphires have a rich history too.  The ancient Persians believed that the earth sat on top of a giant sapphire and that sapphire's reflection was what made the sky blue.

Sapphires have long symbolized noble qualities such as royalty, virtue, wisdom and even holiness. When set in an engagement ring, the sapphire symbolizes faithfulness and sincerity.  Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring is one of the most iconic engagement rings of all time.

The sapphire is actually directly related to the ruby as they are both made up of corundum.  Sapphires are found in white and pink, not to mention violet, dark gray, orange, yellow, green and black.

Due to its hardness of nine on the Mohs scale of relative hardness (diamonds are a 10 whether mined or man-made diamonds), it's a very desirable gemstone for jewelry.
